World's only known wild white giant panda spotted again

On May 22, the Wolong Branch of Giant Panda National Park Administration  released footage of the world's only wild white giant panda captured over the past three years. Recorded from 2024 to 2026, the videos were taken in primeval forests at altitudes between 2,450 and 2,670 meters. In the footage, the white panda roams alone across snowfields, dense woods and bamboo groves. It frequently pauses to forage and patrol its territory slowly. 

On May 25, 2019, the Administration of Wolong National Nature Reserve released photos of this white giant panda to the public for the first time. Compared with its juvenile appearance spotted in 2019, it now has a robust build and moves freely, showing its strong adaptability and sound living conditions in the wild.

Tan Yingchun, staff in charge of the white giant panda conservation research project at Wolong National Nature Reserve, said: "This white giant panda has a sturdy physique. Its limb fur presents a pale golden brown hue after reaching adulthood." It has been observed moving alone in all footage. Its age is estimated at around nine years old.

The Administration Bureau of Wolong National Nature Reserve has launched a special research and conservation program for the white giant panda. Staff deployed grid-based infrared cameras across a 15-square-kilometer area where the panda was discovered in order to continuously monitor its behavior, movement routes, growth patterns and the dynamics of local wild giant panda populations. 

Liu Mingchong, senior engineer of the reserve, stated that the footage provide valuable field dynamic data for ecological research on rare albino wild giant pandas. Moving forward, the Wolong area of the Giant Panda National Park will leverage its monitoring network, refine research protocols, and intensify tracking efforts to study the white panda's behavior, range, and social dynamics.
